With a long history of voting Republican, the 25th Assembly District is considered a safe GOP seat, where incumbent Tom Berryhill easily won re-election in 2008 with 60% of the vote. Senator John McCain defeated Barack Obama in this seat by 7.9 percentage points and Proposition 8 won an overwhelming 66% of the vote. The City of Modesto is the largest community in this Central Valley seat, holding over 80,000 of the District’s 231,000 registered voters. The District also encompasses the communities of Oakdale, Sonora, Mammoth Lakes, Chowchilla, Angels Camp, and Ceres, among others.
With incumbent Tom Berryhill running for State Senate, Former Modesto City Councilwoman Janice Keating is considered the front-runner for this open seat. In 2006, Keating came within just 20 votes of defeating then Senator Dick Montieth for an open Supervisor seat, and since has developed even stronger grassroots and fundraising ties to the business and GOP volunteer communities.
