I was elected to the Modesto City Council in
March of 2002 and have tackled a number of tough issues during my first term
from raising fees on development to ensuring a safe and plentiful supply of
water. As promised, I have focused like a laser on financial issues
and led the effort to make some tough but necessary cuts in the city budget.
I have served on the Finance Committee, the Audit
Committee and the Economic Development Committee and served as Vice-Mayor
in 2004. I currently serve on the Stanislaus Council of Governments
Board.
In 2004 I was honored to be named Woman of the
Year for the 25th Assembly District and received the award from Assemblyman
Dave Cogdill in the State Capitol.
In 2005 I received the Woman of the Year award
from the Ladies Auxiliary of the local VFW Post.
My greatest rewards as a council member come from meeting the citizens, listening to them and helping to solve their problems. I believe strongly in open and responsive government and pride myself on being a conduit for the people's voice in government.

I was born in Massachusetts and moved to Modesto
in 1978. I attended local schools and graduated with honors from Central Catholic
High School in 1984. Prior to marriage I attended UC Santa Cruz as a Berkeley
re-direct, majoring in Chemistry. I married Tim, a mechanical engineer in
1988.
Tim is currently the General Manager of a manufacturing firm in Manteca. I have two wonderful children, Colin, age 17 and Meghan, age 12. They are active in soccer, tennis, baseball and softball.

My local employment has included bookkeeping
for various firms before starting my own business - Janice's Bookkeeping
and Tax Service.
I have coached my children in soccer and baseball
and have played adult soccer myself. Sports have been very important
to me and my family and I feel they are a vital outlet for our youth.
I have been active as the Neighborhood Watch
coordinator for my block and am proud of Modesto's success as a national leader
in this program.
In 2001, I was appointed by the Mayor to the
Modesto Community Qualities Forum, an advisory group to the city council.
It was here that my interest in local politics really caught fire.
